Fertility Myths Busted!

Sometimes fertility can seem like such a mystery. What seems so simple, can be frustratingly, heart-crushingly complicated & mysterious!

So we google.

Some info we find is true, and some are just plain incorrect!

In this article we break down some of the most common fertility myths.

Timing Facts

  • You don't necessarily ovulate on day 14 (most people don't!) - which is why most apps are incorrect

  • When ovulation releases the egg, it's available for less than 24h

  • (*Technically) you're fertile for 5 days before you ovulate and the day of

  • Sex 1-2 days before ovulation is optimal so you don't miss your fertile window

Fertile Mucus Facts

  • Fertile mucus (the stretchy one) usually comes before ovulation to help the sperm survive in an otherwise acidic vagina!

  • Not all women notice fertile mucus - this doesn't mean you can't have babies!!

Sperm Facts

  • Sperm can survive in the cervix for up to 5 days*

  • *This depends on sperm quality. The better the progressive motility (how well they swim forward) the less exact your timing for conception needs to be (above 45% is great!)

  • Poor sperm quality (specifically low morphology or low % of normal forms which is the DNA you're making kids with!) can lead to early miscarriages

Ovulation Facts

  • You often ovulate on different days

  • Stress will delay ovulation (your body doesn't think its 'safe' to make babies)

  • Your ovaries take turns, some women have a 'shy' ovary with a later ovulation date, there's often a pattern, BBT charting helps us know when that is!

  • You can get periods without ovulation! These are called anovulatory cycles and are relatively common
